The kids are back in school, which means Horizons’ fourth year of serving summer meals across the Cedar Rapids metro has come to an end, with approximately 22,983 meals handed out to children and their parents or caregivers as part of the Summer Food Service Program.
Horizons staff, volunteers and partners worked extremely hard to make sure children were fed all summer long. Employees in the Horizons kitchen prepared the food, while NTS and Meals on Wheels drivers transported it to 15 public sites and three closed sites, and folks in the Community Health and Nutrition program made visits to these sites as site monitors to ensure protocol was being met. United Way secured volunteers both individually and with various organizations (see below for full list) who took time out of their busy schedule to serve the meals and interact with the kids. United Way also provided funding to cover adults being able to take advantage of the service.
NTS staff added the BOOK MOBILE visiting summer meal sites Monday-Friday to allow children the opportunity to choose up to two books each visit.
We wish to thank the following for their support of this wonderful program:
