Survivor's Program
The Survivor's Program was created in 1991 to address the needs of families of homicide and vehicular homicide victims, commonly known as "homicide survivors”. This program is located in Cedar Rapids and is part of Horizons, A Family Service Alliance. The Program serves primarily DCI Zones 3 and 4, the central to the southeastern part of the state and will travel beyond these areas based on need, budget and availability of staff. Survivors can contact the program for assistance and make a self referral to the program.

The Survivor's Program addresses the immediate and long-term needs of homicide survivors or individuals, whose lives have been impacted by homicide. If the case remains unsolved, we can still work with a client. There do not need to be formal charges for an individual to be involved in the program. Services include death notification, crisis intervention, arranging for crime scene clean up, individual counseling, criminal justice system advocacy, victim education on courtroom etiquette and trial processes, referral services, assistance in filing for compensation, a long-term support system, and community education.

Additional services include assistance with establishing reward and memorial funds and facilitating appropriate involvement between the media and victims. Services are available at no cost to clients. The purpose of these services is to counterbalance the trauma and insensitive treatment victims often experience in the aftermath of a homicide. Program staff work closely with local law enforcement and prosecutors. The program is able to build trust with homicide survivors, while supporting them in their healing, and bringing attention to their needs and rights. For more information about the Survivor's Program, individuals can contact program staff at (319) 398-3943, toll free 877-653-3123 or survivors@horizonsfamily.org
