Horizon is proud to offer a wide variety of innovative programs to help youth and families achieve positive outcomes. Programs focus on skill development and treatment services of youth in Eastern Iowa who have exhibited emotional or behavioral issues and are referred to Horizons either through the Department of Human Services or the Juvenile Court System.
Supervised Apartment (Independent) Living Programs:
Imagine all your worldly belongings fitting into one or two black plastic garbage bags. This is how many clients enter the Supervised Apartment Living Program.
The program is designed to provide both male and female clients with a supported living experience before they turn 18 and age out of the system. The Supervised Apartment Living Program offers clients supportive programming while living in apartments "scattered" throughout the community.
The program helps the client establish their own goals of economic independence and academic success with emphases on five key points:
- Education
- Employment
- Money and Time Management
- Positive Decision Making
While enrolled in the program, clients work toward the goals they set while accumulating possessions to take with them when they leave the program such as furniture, bedding and household goods. To support clients and help them reach their goals, staff provides training and assistance through scheduled groups and contacts with the schools to ensure attendance and academic progress.
Although clients age out of the system at age 18, there are opportunities for clients to remain in the program after they turn 18 until they have finished high school.
