Nutrition & Wellness Programs

Food is essential to well-being and it is important that everyone has access to food that is fresh and nutritious. The agency is striving to meet this goal through our Nutrition & Wellness Programs.

Summer Meals

Each year nearly 13,000 area students receive free and reduced meals at school. These children often go without 3 full meals a day during the summer.  The Summer Food Service Program, or Summer Meals, provides free meals to any child 18 or younger at seven area locations. Summer Meals Volunteers pick up meals from Horizons, deliver to a site, and distribute the meals to the children, making sure the site operates in accordance with USDA guidance and requirements.

Kids 18 and Under can receive free meals at the following sites from June 5-August 22

  •  Cedar Terrace, 1834 Gretchen Dr SW (off 16th Avenue near Stoney Point)
  •  Cedar Valley Townhomes, 3000 J St SW *
  •  Five Seasons Mobile Homes, 3421 Blairs Ferry Rd NE (west of Walmart)
  •  Hiawatha Public Library, 150 W Willman St in Hiawatha
  •  Johnson School, 355 18th St SE *
  •  Kirkwood Estates, 615 Miller Ave Dr SW (near US-30 and Kirkwood Blvd)

Sharing Local Foods

Horizons' Sharing Local Foods program promotes using local food/farmers and providing nutritious, fresh produce for all. Not only does fresh taste better, it is also more nutritious and better for the environment. The produce shared is donated by organizations and individual members of our community. The produce is free for clients and volunteers or is utilized in Meals on Wheels meals. Signs that identify the produce and the health benefits are provided along with budget friendly recipes using limited ingredients.

Sharing Tables

Sharing Tables are located at the main Horizons building, and at Oakhill Jackson Church and SE Linn Community Center during congregate meals. Attendees can help themselves to donated foods, including bakery items and fresh produce when available.

Fresh Conversations

The Fresh Conversations Program is a monthly nutrition education program led by an on-site facilitator at congregate meal sites. Fresh Conversations attendees receive a monthly newsletter focusing on current nutrition and health topics; activities and exercises that improve flexibility, strength and balance; and recipe sampling.
