Blues in a Blanket of White
by Sara Lenz, Horizons Therapist
Another year of hustle and bustle has passed and the winter months have settled in for their stay. For some, the winter months are merely an inconvenience during times of travel and commute, but for others the months of December, January, and February bring feelings of depression, fatigue, and mood changes that are confusing and frustrating. These are the "winter blues," also called Seasonal Affective Disorder.
Believe it or not, the winter blues are often triggered by a chemical imbalance caused by a lack of sunlight and shorted daylight hours. For some the feelings of fatigue or sadness may be mild, but for others it can be a very serious and debilitating illness.
Those fighting the winter blues don't have to suffer in silence. There are treatment options available such as counseling, medications, or a newer treatment called light therapy. Consider contacting your physician or a therapist to discuss what treatment may be best suited for your individual needs.
