Alliant Energy Foundation Awards $5,000 to Horizons Meals On Wheels

January 06, 2012

Horizons, A Family Service Alliance is pleased to announce it has received a grant for its Meals On Wheels program from the Alliant Energy Foundation. The funds will be used to support the local meals program and to supplement the cost of a van used to deliver meals to homebound older adults and persons with disabilities in the greater Cedar Rapids area.

“The Alliant Energy Foundation is a wonderful and long-standing partner with the Horizons Meals On Wheels program. It is only through their support and the support of other local businesses, foundations, and individuals that we are able to meet the food and nutrition needs of the elderly and persons with disabilities in the greater Cedar Rapids area,” said Bill Gardam, President & CEO of Horizons.

“There is no greater need for the elderly or persons with disabilities than good nutrition, being safe and feeling connected to the community,” shared Tom Aller, President of the Alliant Energy Foundation. “Horizons Meals On Wheels supports the ability for the elderly and persons with disabilities to remain in their homes and live independently by providing food and nutrition services as well as safety checks, support, and interaction. We are proud to be associated with Horizons and the Horizons Meals On Wheels program.”

Horizons Meals On Wheels program is a safety net service for the elderly and persons with disabilities for food and nutrition, safety and wellness checks, nutrition assessments, and nutritional counseling. We help our clients remain independent and in their homes by providing congregate site and home-delivered fresh restaurant-quality food 7-days a week. Staff and volunteers deliver meals and provide safety checks along with emotional and social support. In addition to delivering over 400,000 meals each year to local elderly and persons with disabilities, the program delivers another 100,000 meals annually to children in Head Start preschool classrooms.

Volunteers are always needed to help deliver Meals On Wheels. Call 319-398-3574 to find out more.
